Urban Farming Workshop: The Essentials

Urban farming is trending around the world. It’s a smart and enjoyable way to get healthier, grow communities, support the planet, as well as a welcome return to our food-growing roots.

Social Innovation Japan is thrilled to host a workshop with community member Jon Walsh who will provide a solid foundation to growing your own food, right here in Tokyo! (designed for beginners)

Topics covered will include:

1. Why grow your own food?
2. How commercial food production makes us sick, and what to do about it
3. The importance of seeds
4. Essential gardening equipment
5. How to grow vegetables from seeds
6. How to transplant seedlings
7. Smart strategies to maximize – and extend – harvest
8. Garden watering methods
9. How to gain access to growing space if you don’t have any
10. How to identify soil
11. How and where to buy gardening equipment in Tokyo
12. How and when to sow seeds and plant seedlings
13. Where can we grow food?

Each participant will take home a pot containing either sown seeds or a transplanted seedling, and will receive 3 exclusive guides:

- Japan planting calendar
- How to interpret Japanese seed packets
- Bilingual gardening equipment shopping guide.

Tokyo-based urban farming consultant and instructor Jon Walsh has been spreading his passion for the planet since 2012.

During that time, he has taught key food production skills to over 500 students, teachers, parents and business people, secured and managed a project to install an organic garden at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, and grown thousands
of tomatoes and cucumbers, hundreds of lettuces and large quantities of other no-spray vegetables and herbs.

Jon lectures, runs workshops, builds organic gardens, manages a community garden plot in Tokyo, and teaches urban farming privately and at Tokyo International School and Tokyo American Club.
